Some of the Plains Tribes of Native Americans had a custom, among their warrior societies, of an elite fighter taking an awesome vow. Each tribe and society differed somewhat in the customs and rules surrounding this vow, but in all of them, the warrior would stake his sash to the ground, and hold that piece of ground until he was released-- either by fulfillment of a ritual, or by death. I received a request to do a piece based loosely on the sculpture "The End of the Trail," and at the same time, I was reading Thomas E.
