Book 8 - Rubber Chicken of Destiny Fnaire dreams that the world blows up. In her dream, she sees an angel with a rubber chicken instead of a sword, which continues appearing throughout the book. Hector has finished Fnaire's costume for the next con. She's going as a magimal trainer. The costume is in a very small box, so she slips it in her bag. Fnaire drags herself to dance class where she accidetally discovers that her instructor is an agent of Akhos trying to steal Bohreng's piece of the Sonilusa. With Elipses' help, she traps her using a working digitizer cube. Confronting Hector about where he got working digitizers, we learn that a monster contacted him and gave him the tech from the actual magimals world, and that magimals takes place in a real world which someone visited and wrote about. Investigating, Frye finds the monster is an agent of Gos who hoped to get the instructor out of the way to grab the base for himself. The fur war intensifies. Karma and Moonpuppy are campaigning for interspecies marriage when they are attacked. They are rescued by a small army of aquatic animals led by Taylor and Gracie. All of them decide to join DRAG for mutual protection. Rudy makes a deal with Akhos. In exchange for his freedom, he is to grab the sonilusa base. If he does, he gets rewarded with the power to destroy his enemies. Farmer Taylor and his horses join DRAG when a gang of snakes goes on a crime spree. Taylor gets dinosaurs to produce antivenom and helps DRAG to capture Rudy. Fnaire learns from Bohreng that there are numerous portals connecting various worlds. This is how the eldrich energy that powers Oberon's gates circulates back to the apos of the multiverse. If one controls a certain number of gates, one could kill Nexicul by redirecting the magic stream around him. Shin, getting desperate, employs the population cleansing society, invoking a contract he made years ago with Egston, who founded the society after being exiled from Jaywardia to get them to bring him meat. Edie, it turns out, has been trying to prevent the assembly of the Sonilusa. She long suspected that the monsters were working for Gos, and has been raising an army by giving special powers to operatives no one would suspect, including Fnox, Rayak and Loco Poco. When she tries to recruit Linda, Linda panics and blows their cover. The PCS attempts to assassinate Fnaire, but they are stopped by the mutant club, which has grown quite large. From the PCS, they are able to find Shin and track him down. They take his rod, which causes hi to shrivel. Shin escapes to the land of puns where he is torn apart by the now adult webhounds. Upon hearing what happened to Shin, Gos hides in Pescadia. DRAG learns of this through the Pescadian ambassador to Equinia. DRAG goes to Otter Island to ask for help. The nightmares are already after Gos. Upon learning that the night mares' commander has a son, he orders Red Fluffle kidnapped. It's here that we find that Zookie is a special kind of robot created by the Mephiterians to guard the Malumoja and her sister, similar to Aroma's psychic teddy bear. Jim Fluffle joins the otters using the sealskin coat to rescue his adopted son. Gos is defeated and imprisoned in the dimension of dreams. His staff is collected. We find out Mt. Horsetooth keeps sliding around because it's a prop that wasn't properly secured. Also, the prison is co-ed because it was decided long ago that it was too expensive to sort prisoners by gender and species, and when a herm platypus was convicted of bank robbery, it was just too confusing. Dr. Zonk, who turns out to be the alter of an ancient wizard Astlegar, surviving as a ghost only because the wizard had a horcrux, has been searching for a way to give alters their own bodies, and believes he has found a way on Zizi's Island. He needs knowledge which only his host had, and plans to free his host from the horcrux, but Bloody Mary and Hoots Jr. talk him out of it. Instead, he uses the magic scroll. We find out that Astlegar actually created the magic scroll just before he was killed on an expedition launched from what would become Otter Island. When he learns what will happen to him, Astlegar agrees to help, on the condition that he be revived from his horcrux and allowed to live as a normal man. Zonk agrees. A little research finds that the horcrux is in pieces, with one piece in ootland and one in Cladia. The horcrux is a set of spellbooks. Bohreng explains that the touchstone of the Sonilusa is located inside Malaku's horcrux. The cast of QOTU has managed to lift most of the protective spells. Astlegar tells them how to remove the last one. The therian urn is shattered and Malaku killed, but not after putting up a fight. However, the humanity of the QOTU crew has been used up, and they do not return to human form. The metanobles, having split, with some following the evil Demaris, discover that she is actually a minion of Nexicul. Promising an easy end to the war, she tricks the metanobles into into inviting Nexicul into their camp. The rebels balk as soon as they realize what is happening. They barely get away with their lives, but Prince Durr manages to swipe the brace in the confusion. Tchamuk goes after the Sonilusa. Number one has finished evolving, and is not a cloud of small, batlike creatures. Tchamuk seems untouchable in an intangible flying fortress, but Hector's bird suits, with their alien technology, prove just the thing to allow DRAG to get into the fortress. However, Tchamuk proves much too powerful, and his fortress comes ever closer to Frye's mansion to destroy it. As Tchamuk prepares to destroy it, the meter reader, who has learned to travel in 4 dimensions, arrives with Horace the ghast, who traps him in a genie bottle. Akhos is still in the game, and pushing the fur war with all his might. He riles up the anti-furry crowd, who raid the animal shelter to kill everyone inside. Drag comes to the rescue and Linda is seen riding away on the back of her woodpecker friend. Reznor returns from the other diension and resurrects Starr. They return to find the ring orbitting the black hole and throw it in, but get all the way back to Earth before discovering that the ring attached itself to Starr's tail. The fur war begins going very badly, now. Astlegar insists that the Sonilusa must be completed and used to reverse Malaku's spell, effectively eliminating furries and making the fur war moot. reluctantly, Aroma agrees to do it. But the Sonilusa is missing one piece, which turns out to be in a Snowglobe in Santa Claus' possession. However, Santa is on vacation, spending two weeks with his new reindeer friends, and no one knows how to find him. When the sonilusa is assembled, Aroma tries to reverse Malaku's spell, but discovers she can't. Morok deduces that Malumoja means "chosen one", and Aroma is not the one chosen for this task. Fnaire is. Fnaire is about to wipe out furrykind when the rubber chicken catches her eye. This makes her stop and think that there is a third alternative to war or surrender. Using objects that Oren has collected throughout the book, she transmits a dream of Firoz playing the piano across the multiverse, complete with her feelings of love. A few days later, the fur war has stopped completely. The pieces of the Sonilusa are scattered again, to Zizi's Island, The Hundredth Vale, The dream realm (using a digitizer), Pianostan, Equinia and the North Pole, with one of Oren and Fnaire's children guarding each one when they grow up. Of the two remaining pieces, one is given to the holidays to insure their strength and survival. The other is sent to Mephiter. The end.
